oh, look, a horror movie

violaceaCan I tell you how much I hate it when people write fic whose entire premise - put outside of a cut tag - is future-episode spoilery, especially when they're spoilers I've been working very hard to avoid? Grrr.
Anyway. That rant has nothing to do with Supernatural, but the rest of the post does!
Okay. The big question - Jo, yes or no? In the end, over here, the answer is 'yes'. Props to Alona Tal for being an excellent actress. That was well played - while part of me wishes the writing staff had come up with some other story for her than daddy issues, because hey, been there, done that, have several different t-shirts picked up over the last season or so, I like the way she held herself, with believable parts fright and bravado. She was a little stupid, but believably so for a rookie hunter, and she used her brain enough to avoid being a dumb blonde. So, all in all, I'm in for the Jo thing.
... this, however, is not a romantic relationship with Dean, and I'm hoping the writing staff is smart enough to stay away from that. What it is, really, is a parallel relationship to the one Dean has with Sam - sibling-ish, or, at least, Dean as mentor and protector. I saw that face form clearly with Dean the minute he noticed her dad's initials on the knife. I know Jo is supposed to be 21 (or thereabouts), but she plays as so much younger than Dean, inexperienced and naive. It's an interesting relationship, played as mentor/student. Here's another younger person, one Dean now feels an obligation to protect and help. Especially when his brain processes the idea that John was responsible for her father's death.
And there, we have a great parallel, too. Here's Dean, walking around with the weight of the world on his shoulders, feeling totally responsible for his father's death. Now, he gets to toss around the idea that John caused someone else's death. I think this is going to be the means by which Dean lets go of some of that guilt and anguish ... I think, if I'm guessing, we're going along the path of a hunter's responsibility - that anyone who chooses that life knows what they're getting into, puts themselves into the line of fire willingly, knowing exactly what might come. That the only person responsible for a hunter's injury or death is that hunter, in the end.
Anyway ... this season is turning out to be the Dean Show, isn't it? I can't complain. Jensen's knocking it out of the park at every turn. And I'm really enjoying the extra characters we're bringing in ... not only have they chosen well with the actors and the character types, but the extra people lets us have a little more subtlety in the Winchesters' relationship with each other. We can't get beaten over the head with brotherly angst in every episode ... so, having other people that we're actually invested in lets us have a breather, and also the opportunity to look at who they are with other people, which then in turn gives us a better idea of how different/same they are when interacting with each other.
I'm babbling. In short, with only a few minor quibbles, I have to give it up to the writing staff for this entire season so far. They're impressing the hell out of me!
