Well, I was supposed to be playing D&D tonight, so I napped for a bit after work to make sure I could stay up without issue. The DM isn't feeling well, though, so we ended up having to cancel at the last minute.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard

A mutual on Bluesky borrowed one of my Rooks from Dragon Age: The Veilguard for Rookanis fanart purposes! đź’•

She had a specific art ref as a brain worm and needed to borrow someone else's Rook to use it on, so I got some lovely art of one of my Crow Rooks, Gianna de Riva.

ETA: Official post here since the original was just a comment to me.

Critical Role + AO3

Oh, good! I was hoping that the AO3 would come up with a plan for the Critical Role tag before CR4 started next week, and it looks like they have.

I know that I didn't have to do it, but I went through and edited all 64 of my Critical Role fanworks on the AO3 to change the fandom from Critical Role (Web Series) to Critical Role: Exandria (Web Series). I also added a non-canonical fandom tag to each of them to make it very clear which campaign/miniseries they belong to, if only because it's starting to get a bit complicated.

For those curious (which is approximately no one), the non-canonical fandom tags that I added are as follows:

Critical Role: The Adventures of the Darrington Brigade (Web Series),
Critical Role: Bells Hells (Web Series)
Critical Role: Mighty Nein (Web Series)
Critical Role: The Screw Job (Web Series)
Critical Role: Vox Machina (Web Series)
Exandria Unlimited (Web Series)
Exandria Unlimited: Calamity (Web Series)

... although admittedly I was already using several of those non-canonical tags prior to me editing my fics today. It's really just the three main campaign tags that are newly added as of today.

First of all, relax! I'm far from being picky, and I can pretty much guarantee that I'll love whatever you decide to create for me. These are nothing but guidelines, for you to take to heart or ignore to your heart's content. Also, hey! You're writing me fic or drawing me art! That's automatically a good reason for me to love you, no matter what. So, please, keep that in mind. Trust me, you can pretty much do no wrong. ♥

National Consumer Panel

[personal profile] settiai
I've participated in the National Consumer Panel since January 2014, which involved scanning my grocery purchases and doing the occasional survey in exchange for gifts cards and such. Unfortunately, I've finally had to break down and delete my account due to their continued transphobia.

When participating, you have the list the demographic information of the shopper, and the only gender options listed are Male or Female. Which, you know, is an issue if you're legally nonbinary. Especially since X is a valid gender option on US passports as well as driver's licenses in many states. In addition, they have an annual demographic survey each year where you provide more information about yourself, and - once again - the only gender options are Male or Female. If you want to participate, you have to intentionally misgender yourself, or you cannot proceed forward through the survey.

I've been reaching out to the National Consumer Panel about this issue since 2021. In both 2021 and 2022, my messages were acknowledged, and they point-blank stated that the issue was that their parent companies (NielsenIQ and Circana) dictated what gender options they were allowed to list.

In December 2022, I received the following email:

That email? Was the last communication that I received from NCP one way or another. I've continued to reach out each year when the annual demographic survey goes out with only Male and Female as the gender options listed, but I haven't received any response from NCP at all since 2022.

It's very clear at this point that the blatant transphobia of forcing nonbinary individuals to misgender themselves to use their site is intentional and won't be changing. Maybe it is the parent companies that are to blame, but the fact that NCP sent me an email in 2022 saying they were working to fix the issue and then ignored every single message that I've sent since then? Well, that says a lot. If nothing else, they're the ones who chose to simply stay quiet.

At this point, I'm done. I deleted my account earlier today, and I sent them an email making it clear why I've done so. With the current state of the world, I can't in good conscience continue to participate with an organization that's not even pretending to try to not to be transphobic.

I honestly doubt this post is going to do much of anything in the grand scheme of things (and the same's true of the thread that I posted over on Bluesky). Still, I wanted to at least make a public post about it just in case it lets even one person out there know that the National Consumer Panel shouldn't be trusted if you're LGBTIQA+.

Critical Role: Campaign 4

The more they release about the upcoming fourth campaign of Critical Role, the more excited I am for it to start. CR3 was very much dragging for me by the end, mainly because it felt almost as if it was more a sequel to CR1 and CR2 with the CR3 characters taking the back burner at times. There's a reason that I don't, for example, like the big crossover events that Marvel and DC like to do, and that's what it reminded me of for the last six months or so of the campaign.

Everything I'm seeing about CR4, though, has me optimistic that the fresh start in a brand new world it's promising will be a good thing. I can't wait to actually meet the characters and see how many of them I properly mesh well with.

Media Round Up: Mixed Feelings

Somehow I always go for long stretches without much to say about media and then finished several things at once, and suddenly its time to post here again.

Dominion and Devotion—Instead of watching any of the dramas I’ve already started I watched this mini drama (24 15 min episodes). I’ve had mixed luck with mini dramas but I enjoyed this one! It’s a crossdressing girl drama with enemies to lovers and political intrigue! The premise is that the FL has been raised from birth to pretend to be a young weak prince, in the hopes of someday escaping the palace. But instead she gets picked to be the puppet emperor.

The “AFAB person was raised as a boy for Reasons” variety of crossdressing girl stories really have a different vibe than the crossdressing girl adventures I grew up with, there’s just less of a sense of agency when the FL didn’t get to choose to crossdress.

Spoilers I was not expecting the tragic ending thought! I thought it would somehow turn out ok up until the last moment.

Content Notes: Child death, corporal punishment (children and adults), torture (presented as righteous), blood

Wow the Worldep 1-4—Yes, I’m watching yet another Chinese reality show featuring Liu Yuning. This travel show where a group of people visit a bunch of cities near the 40th parallel. It’s pretty charming! I love that there's a little cartoon planet that represents each person. I would prefer a bit more focus on the tourism – tell us more about these places, and describe the food please!

Ancestors and Anxiety: Daoism and the Birth of Rebirth in China by Stephen R. Bokenkamp—This was a super interesting book about Daoist ideas about the afterlife and how they evolved after contact with Buddhism. I kinda wish I had read this before finalizing my translation of the about Wei Huacun because she’s mentioned in this and there’s a bunch of useful context about early Daoist practice.

Dragon Steel by Laurence Yep—The second book in this series which I’m reading to the kid. Still holds up well, I enjoyed the under sea dragon kingdom which was one of the bits that stuck with me from my first reading. This one does have some fatphobia though, which I didn’t enjoy.

The Incandescent by Emily Tesh—I tried so hard with this book! Well maybe that’s not strictly true because at first I wasn’t going to read it because I didn’t really like the one thing by Emily Tesh I had read before (Silver in the Wood) but then I found out more about the premise – a teacher a magical school who actually has to do paperwork, so I decided to give it a go.

I loved the first third of this book with its teaching and risk assessment and a big climatic battle that could be the end of a different book. Saving the world part way through and then having to live with the consequences would make for an interesting book, but that doesn’t seem to be what’s happening here. Instead we introduced a new very annoying character.

I was considering DNFing at that point but I asked some friends if he went away and they said that I could expect less of him, so I kept reading. And there was a lot less of him for a bit, but another thing started frustrating me: the story was providing big clues about something that the main character was not figuring out. I really don’t enjoy that kind of reader character knowledge mismatch! That’s been resolved now but I didn’t feel motivated to keep reading after that.

I really wanted to like this book because teaching at a magical school is a cool concept, and so many of my friends loved it but after the first third I found it pretty frustrating.

I wanted to take a minute to type up my plans for the weekend while I'm thinking about it. I'll probably type up a proper to-do list sometime tomorrow (well, I suppose it's technically today at this point) so that I can mark things off as I do them, but I thought it would help to at least come up with a summary of sorts.

More under the cut. )

In general? I'm really hoping that Monday will mark a new beginning of sorts. That's the plan, as long as the universe cooperates. 🤞🏻

Life has been exhausting even without all of the stuff going on in the US in general, and I'm just so fucking tired. I need a new beginning, even if "autumn is finally here" is a relatively arbitrary one.

Critical Role

Two fandom-related posts in a row? Really? I can't even remember the last time that happened.

Critical Role has its fourth campaign starting in just over two weeks, and they posted the first artwork of the new characters earlier this week. They haven't released any other details like classes and such, but I'm very, very, very curious about several of them. Especially since they posted a video earlier today about character vibes, some of which sound kinda amazing.

The fandom is definitely ramping up again, which is helping with forcing my brain to get through watching as many of the specials that I've missed as I can before CR4 starts. I've missed having a proper weekly fandom, and I really want to try to get back in the habit of napping after work on Thursdays so that I can stay up late watching the new episodes live.

Yuletide!

Yuletide nominations are officially open, which means I have to get my ass in gear and actually figure out what I want to request and nominate this year.

A couple of my usual requests are almost always nominated by other people, so I can hopefully scratch those off the list. That doesn't help narrow it down a lot, though, because I've written down a frankly ridiculous number of fandoms this year that I've been considering requesting.

Right now, I'm leaning towards the following for my nominations:

Black Ships - Jo Graham OR Hand of Isis - Jo Graham OR Stealing Fire - Jo Graham
Home Alone (Movies) (mainly because of this post)
Hornblower (TV)
Peacemakers (2003)
The Witch Wolf (Webcomic)

My other requests will depend on what does or doesn't get nominated, but some of my ideas for fandoms that tend to show up in the tag set regularly are:

Gargoyles (Cartoon)
Jurassic Park Original Trilogy (Movies)
Justice League International
The Martian (2015)
The Scarlet Pimpernel (1982)
Titanic (1997)
Treasure Planet

Of course, there's always a chance that I'll see something in the tag set that I wasn't expecting that calls to me. That's definitely happened before, and it'll probably happen again.
