cross road blues

If you wanted to make the case that this was the best episode of either season, I wouldn't argue. Well-written, great character work, great weaving of the legend-of-the-week with the overall mytharc. Yes, most everything that happened was predictable at some point or another, but that was perfectly fine. It was well-constructed, a fantastic framework to give our boys information that the audience already had.
(Shallow tip: dude, why do they usually make Sam read all the Latin? Because I would sit for an entire episode of NOTHING but Jensen muttering Latin phrases in his growling voice. Holy shit, people. ::fans self::)
Dean is too responsible to make the deal - he thought about it, was tempted deep down, but in the end, that's what separates him from his father. (I'd say that it's what makes Dean better at what he does than his father, but I know better than to get into a discussion about John Winchester.) Because, despite the fact that he feels responsible for his father's current situation, whatever it is, his responsibility to Sam takes precedence. Always has, and it's the one thing that's keeping him from going under now.
I don't have much to analyze about this episode - basically, it simply laid bare everything we've already speculated about Dean's state of mind and John's fate. We needed this episode, or else risked this turning into one of those needlessly mysterious shows, with the audience shouting "WE GET IT" while the characters remain determinedly clueless. What I love about this show is that, no matter how much creep and gore we get, it always comes back to the family, brothers, relationship, and this season, the writing staff is doing a really damned amazing job at keeping their center. Bravo. This is an episode I will cheerfully watch again.

Date: 2006-11-17 03:29 am (UTC)I was thinking the same thing. But considering that SN night falls on Thanksgiving I can't blame them too much. I'm assuming they'll be back for at least an episode or two before going away for the long Holiday hiatus.
