So, we have Torchwood.
The bad: Lousy dialogue, anvils are heavy, yo.
Still, a good episode, intriguing concept and some nifty character work. I'm very interested in the fact that Owen was obsessed with the rape/murder case. Can't think that was a coincidence on the part of the writers! Here's the thing with Owen - if it weren't for that scene in the bar, I'd probably enjoy him quite a bit. Attitude-wise, he kinda reminds me of another Harper, from another TV show that I would miss if Kevin Sorbo hadn't stomped it into tiny little pieces under his great big shoe, not that I'm BITTER or anything. Hmph. Anyway, where was I? Oh, yeah, Owen. If it weren't for the alien perfume scene, I'd be more amused than anything by his obnoxious office personality - everyone else seems to take the piss out of him, and they all have good chemistry. But, the bar scene was highly disturbing, which is why his obsession in this episode is so interesting to me. The beginning of Owen's journey to self-awareness? Perish the thought, it came earlier than I expected!
And why am I talking about Owen, anyway, when I still haven't recovered from the Jack and Gwen gun porn scene? Jesus, people. ::fans self::
... where was I again? Oh, yeah, I'm trying to have serious thoughts here. Gwen's little boy ghost - now, are the writers just running out of time periods to filch from, or is the fact that the boy was evacuated from London during the Blitz supposed to mean something?
The Torchwood Institute System Interface is an interesting site to explore, if you don't get yourself irritated by trying to catch the files. Some of it clarifies things we see - the fact that Gwen was involved in victim counseling as a constable explains her tendency to jump right into the personal side of cases. Some of it, of course, just makes you wonder ... Jack's file is full of cryptic nonsense, a few things about the sale of the "Towcaster-Cockley Brake Line" back in the early 60s. I've seen someone over on the community assume that means that Jack has been in Cardiff this time around for 40 years or more ... I don't know. Interesting thought. And Ianto's file is completely locked down. Hmmm.
In short, this show is the guiltiest of guilty pleasures, and I want to see the next episode now, please. ;)
