[livejournal.com profile] jchalo does these every so often, and they always fascinate me. Since I can never resist posting music, and since I'm in the public-post mode today anyway ... let's see what I can come up with. :)

Frankenstein mix: concept explained here, this round's masterlist here. All these on Sendspace.

1) A song that could have been written about/for you

Carbon Leaf - Paloma

Paloma you cry out you beg for connection
The dreams you seek are straight ahead in every direction

Because it was playing when I read the question. Because, when I first heard Indian Summer, the truth of it made me cry - and because I always feel personally wounded when the folks over on the CL message board overanalyze this song and decide that Paloma must have been a bitch. ;)

2) A song for that bad day to end all bad days

Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven

And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forest will echo with laughter

Because it was played on the worst day.

3) A song about the end of the world

a-ha - Forever Not Yours

I'll soon be gone now
Forever not yours
It won't be long now
Forever not yours

Because the video was a nifty cool Noah's Ark sendup, that for some reason always makes my breath hitch to think about it.

4) A song about the devil

Voltaire - Almost Human

What did i ever do to you
that you should treat me this way?
is it really such a crime
for an angel to speak his mind?

Because I love the sympathetic look at the devil. A maligned soul, Lucifer. ;)

5) A song that reminds you of your favorite pair of jeans

Butch Walker - Best Thing You Never Had (live acoustic)

When you act like nothing ever happened
I feel like I should feel bad
But I can't like someone who thought
They're the only one that mattered
I hope that you're flattered
Cause you broke this down
The best thing that you never had

Because the last concert I wore my absolute favorite jeans to was Butch Walker. Because it reminds me of swaying, stage right at the Fine Line, fog machine haze in front of me and a captivated crowd singing along with every word.

6) A song for lying to your mother

Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar On Me

I'm hot, sticky sweet
From my head to my feet

Because my mom HATED this song, and so we lied to her after we went to the mall and bought Hysteria. We'd listen to it softly, in one of our bedrooms, to make sure she didn't get mad at us.

7) A drunk song

Great Big Sea - The Old Black Rum

I drank sixteen doubles for the price of one ...

Do I really have to explain this one? :) The best drinking song ever. Bar none.

8) A song for truth

The Cranberries - Zombie

Another head hangs lowly,
Child is slowly taken.
And the violence caused such silence,
Who are we mistaken?

The lyrics themselves are truth, but completely aside from that, because it signifies a time when truth was defined by tenuous impressions, emotion, and a shaky sense of self-worth. Because, to me, it represents the time when the truth of my life was rewritten.

9) A song you could have written about somebody else

Indigo Girls - Closer To Fine

I'm trying to tell you something about my life
maybe give me insight between black and white

For Kate, the last little bit, with an eye to the future.

10) A song to listen to while watching a fire burn

Bruce Springsteen - O Mary Don't You Weep

Well one of these nights bout 12 o'clock
This old world is gonna rock

Okay, it's about water and drowning. Still, when I thought of "watching a fire burn", I immediately thought of watching a bonfire, and this was the first song I started humming under my breath. So, because my brain says so.

11) A song about an angel

Robbie Williams - Angels

and through it all she offers me protection
a lot of love and affection
whether I’m right or wrong

Because, occasionally, it's okay to be literal. :)

12) A modern-day lullaby

Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers - Keep Me In Your Thoughts

Keep me in your thoughts while I'm away
Remember how it was and the words we thought to say
Darlin' I could never be distraught
If only you would keep me in your thoughts

Because it's beautiful, and light, and makes me want to drift away and dream of someone.

Grabbed the Voltaire file, because ever since finally listening to a bunch of stuff I'd downloaded years ago, I've discovered I really love him!

Yay, Voltaire! He's so awesome. I'm very sad to be missing him at D*con this year, sigh.
