violacea: (ianto is a damsel in distress)
So, there was Matt Nathanson last night. Well, first, there was some alcohol and Ben & Jerry's for pregame activities, because it was that kind of week. (B&J's Oatmeal Cookie Chunk? Either the devil's invention or the food of the gods. Seriously, kids.) And then we didn't quite time things correctly to miss Ari Herstand. [livejournal.com profile] northatlantic and I heard about half of his song mocking his mother for telling him not to quit school to be a musician, looked at each other, and said "hey, the Coffman bookstore is still open!" Someone needs to tell me precisely how that kid ended up with some sort of slot at SXSW, because I don't get it.

Kyle Riabko was ... all right. Points for the "Thriller" bridge, even if he and 90% of the room are younger than the song. And, he's got a really nice voice with a really good range, and a good sense of melody in his songs. But, somehow, he's not quite soup yet. I thought he sounded like a less mature, more poppy Jonny Lang, while Dre thought he was the bastard love child of Howie Day and Jason Mraz. He also looks like a grown-up Haley Joel Osment, which makes it a little hard to take him seriously. Heh. But, give him a few years, he'll probably be really good!

Between sets, we spotted Sam Winchester. No lie. Big handsome kid with broad shoulders and tousled dark hair ... would have been happier to stand next to him if he wasn't blocking my view. Heh.

Then, there was Matt. Who was in his usual form. We solved blind items from US Magazine! Hee. And there was a extended metaphor about sundaes as sex. There was a made-up song called "Wrinkle" that nearly stole my ability to breathe. He played a bunch of new songs, most I'd heard before, but I couple I hadn't, and he says that the new album is coming out August 14th. I'll believe it when I have it in my hot little hands, but hey, it's something to work towards! He played an amazing cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Born To Run", and mixed Counting Crows' "Anna Begins" in with "Bent", which was great.

So, very good night. And then I slept for nearly 11 hours. Minus the bits where I got up and sprayed water at the cat because she was howling outside my door. I finally resorted to earplugs. I think that means she won.

Today? Cleaning. It's going to rain all weekend, so I should stay in here and Get Shit Done.
