any concert is made better with a keytar
Mar. 7th, 2007 07:03 amLast night,
leighblack and I went to the Cartel/Cobra Starship/Quietdrive/Boys Like Girls show at First Ave. We were possibly the oldest people in the audience, excepting a few parents here and there, but that turned out to be a bonus - it earned us primo spots on the rail upstairs in the 21+ area! This, my friends, would be the advantage to liking the same music as kids half your age.
We bought the tickets for Boys Like Girls; we'd seen them open for Butch Walker last summer, and really liked them. Their album has since been released, and so it was really fun to see the crowd reaction to them this time - a good portion of the crowd knew their songs, sang along, and everyone generally had a good time. Very good set, and we might head out to see them again when they open for Hellogoodbye at Trocadero in May.
Quietdrive are apparently local boys; I'd never heard of them before. They were great! Good enough that I bought their CD on the way out. The lead singer has an interesting sort of stage presence - sorta Axl Rose, or Jim Morrison, with possibly a bit of Mick Jagger thrown in for good measure. They sold me on their music when they first busted out a pretty awesome cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time", then launched into a song that had the singer playing the violin. That's what rock music needs, more violin solos!
... or, possibly, more keytars. Meet Cobra Starship. They may be a mostly made-up band, but damn if their live show isn't worth the price of admission. More to the point, if their lead singer's stage presence isn't worth the price of admission. They were wicked fun, man. So much fun that I'm now actually considering tickets to the Honda Civic tour, for both them and +44; I don't mind Fall Out Boy, but I don't like them enough to spend money to go to an arena show. But, now? Depends on the state of my wallet, but ... maybe. I'd see these guys again.
Unfortunately for Cartel, it was a bad decision to put Cobra Starship right before them. Because, about three songs into their set, Leigh and I were both like "okay, they sound really good, but the show's kinda boring, you know?" We ended up opting for Perkins rather than staying and fighting the mass of humanity once the show was over.
So, all in all, a very good night of music. :) Stay tuned, Leigh will have videos of Boys Like Girls and Cobra Starship available soon.
Speaking of concerts, just discovered that Matt Nathanson is playing at Coffman on the 30th! Sweet! March will come in with a blizzard and go out with Matty. Which, really, says all you need to know about my month.
