This is one of the most stunning stories I’ve read, in this fandom and any other. Honestly, the word exquisite doesn’t even seem to properly apply. To say I love this story is an understatement, but it’s all I’ve got right now.
The way you’ve explored these characters (through Ariadne) and made them even more real, made them even more of an extension of those same ones we met in the film, is a talent I applaud you for. I found myself drawn into this world you created, invested in the people, the lives they’ve come to lead, the way they are all still searching for something that’s so close yet just beyond their fingertips. Great mesh of the serious and humour…because that’s how people talk.
I absolutely dig the various conversations, the simplicity of them and the profound revelations they offer. Her visit with Cobb is spot on, as is her dealings with Miles. The parts where she dreams of Mal (and the way those slowly change) are fantastic in what they say about Ariadne, as her own vision of Mal changes, as her own sense of self changes and she comes to own who she is. Love that she realizes she’s not half of a whole, but a whole person all on her own, and that wanting to be needed is another thing all together. Again, simple. Again, profound. It goes to the heart of Ariadne on a personal journey.
The final bit with Arthur is exactly what I hoped to see. From the flashback to the present, I could feel the emotions brimming beneath the characters, the tension of withholding, then revealing, of finally coming to a place where the past is set aside and they’re in the here and now, together.
